In 2008 I realized that it was becoming harder and harder to keep up with the high school students I took on field trips. And ordinary activities like gardening were getting more difficult. That was also the year Crossfit Santa Cruz Central opened and I decided to try it out. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was able to keep teaching high school Marine Biology and taking my students kayaking and snorkeling until I retired.

During the years that I have been a part of the CSCC community I witnessed many examples of superb coaching. In particular, I noticed and observed the work of Jimmy Baker. He was a retired school principal who worked one on one with older adults. Jimmy helped his athletes work toward functional fitness: balance and endurance, mobility to garden and strength to get that carry-on luggage in the overhead bin.

Jimmy inspired me to become a CrossFit trainer and learn more about adaptive coaching techniques. Now I am a retired educator and I enjoy working with older adults who want to work on functional fitness. My goal as a CrossFit coach is to find out what functional fitness means for each athlete I work with. And I use the collective wisdom of the CSCC community and my own experience to help that athlete enjoy the activities that are most important to them.
